Suzano appears to be the kind of business that may be statistically cheap, but that is not the same as being a wonderful business. In Buffett’s style, I would first ask whether this is a company I can understand with confidence over a long period and whether its economics are predictably strong. Here, the answer is mixed. The business has durable demand for pulp and paper products and has shown the ability to grow sales over time, which is a point in its favor. The balance sheet also appears sensibly managed, and management has maintained meaningful family ownership, which suggests some alignment with shareholders. But the more important question is whether the business consistently converts that activity into dependable profits. The evidence here is not reassuring. That tells me the company likely lacks the kind of steady pricing power and dependable economic engine that Buffett prefers. A wonderful business should not require optimism about commodity cycles or favorable external conditions to produce acceptable results. It should be able to earn good returns with regularity. Management seems decent rather than exceptional. There is alignment, and leverage has been conservative, both of which are positives. However, the record does not clearly show the sort of consistently compounding earnings power and highly efficient capital allocation that would make this an obvious long-term keeper. The valuation does provide a real margin of safety, and that matters. Buffett likes buying dollars for less than a dollar. Still, he also prefers wonderful companies at fair prices over merely fair companies at wonderful prices. Suzano looks closer to the second category: a potentially attractive price attached to a business with uneven underlying economics. So the right Buffett-style conclusion is neutral. I would not dismiss it outright because the price appears favorable and the financial posture is not reckless. But I also would not be eager to call it bullish because the business quality and earnings consistency do not clearly meet the standard for a high-conviction long-term holding.
